Going from a “concept on a napkin” to a “polished video on the web” used to take weeks. Now, with GenAI, getting that polished video can take less than a half hour.

As a proof on concept, I used Descript’s new integration with ChatGPT to generate a short marketing video. With these tools, the time to finished video was under five minutes…

PROCESS

1. I opened up Descript’s marketing email and clicked on the “Try AI Video Maker” button.
2. That click took me to ChatGPT where I entered the prompt: “Create a video about using Generative AI in marketing. Your audience is Director and VP level marketers who have limited experience with GenAI”
3. ChatGPT then generated a script. Though I was offered the chance to edit the script’s “tone” or “focus” I accepted it “as is” with no edits.
4. ChatGPT then asked me to choose a visual style from the list below. Personally, I enjoy watercolor painting, so I picked the first option.
   • Watercolor and Ink– Artistic and expressive, like a hand-painted story.
   • Whiteboard Doodles– Simple and engaging, like an animated sketch.
   • Low Polygon 3D– Modern and sleek, with a geometric 3D look.
   • Plasticine– Playful and colorful, like stop-motion clay animation.
5. ChatGPT then generated a preview image to illustrate the selected style in the context of the script.

6. I accepted the preview image and then ChatGPT opened the Descript desktop app to generate the video.
7. Two minutes after I updated my Descript desktop app it generated the video at the bottom of this post. The Descript app has full video editing capability, so if I had wanted to, I could have changed the voice, timing, script, imagery, and several other features.

RESULTS

The video below is completely unedited and shows just how much progress has been made with GenAI tools over the past two years.  Impressive!

In practice this video is not something that I would have posted and associated with a brand that I managed.  For example, the script needs to be tightened, the imagery made more consistent and relevant to the audience, the fonts professionalized, and a CTA added to the end screen.

But, the creation process was literally a three minute exercise.  Imagine what could be done with 10X the effort… with 30 minutes of work!
